Steven Brent Mills

Steven Brent Mills, 89, Flora, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Health Care in Delphi.  He was born in Kokomo on March 15, 1933, to Bernald and Phoebe (Wilson) Mills.  On July 15, 1961, he married the love of his life, Betty Jane Sanderson.  She preceded him in death on July 8, 2022.

Steve graduated from Flora High School in 1951.  He attended Purdue University where he earned his BS degree in 1958 and MS degree in 1965.  While at Purdue he was a member of the Agriculture Education Society, the Block and Bridle Club, and the Rifle and Pistol Club.  He enjoyed telling stories about his time working on the Purdue Dairy Farm and shooting drills in the Purdue Armory.

Steve served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Military Police Officer in Germany.  He was active in local veteran organizations and participated as a member of the Carroll County Honor Guard.  He worked as a teacher for 37 years, starting at Ladoga, then Camden, and spending the last 32 years at Carroll High School as a biology teacher until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of Flora Christian Church, long time member of the Flora Masonic Lodge and then the Camden Lodge.  He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and teaching hunter safety classes at Carroll High School.   He enjoyed taking motorcycle trips out west with his buddies, hiking the Grand Canyon twice, providing space on the family farm for wildlife and maintaining wildlife friendly areas.  But above all he loved spending time with is family.  Especially farm adventures and fishing with his grandsons, and watching them ride go-karts, dirt bikes, tractors, and other “grandpa toys” through the woods.

Steve is survived by his daughters, Angie (Tim) Delworth and Jane (Jeremy) Deno; and four grandsons, Alex and Carter Delworth and Brock and Luke Deno.

Along with his wife of 61 years, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brent Mills; and a brother David Mills.

Memorial visitation will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022 from 10am until the time of the service at 12pm at Flora Christian Church.  Pastor Benjamin Lantzer will officiate.  Burial will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery.  Genda Funeral Home ~ Reinke Chapel is assisting with the services.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll Memorial Scholarship Fund or Flora Christian Church.  Online condolences may be left at www.gendafuneralhome.com.
